Spotlight Series on Honey
Did you know that there are over 3,795 BC beekeepers with live bee colonies? Did you know that BC produces over 18.8 million dollars of honey annually? Students can learn about BC honey from farm to table in the new BCAITC Spotlight Series on Honey.
Spotlight on Honey
The Spotlight Series on Honey provides a selection of intermediate/secondary level honey educational resources that can be downloaded from this page. Take a Bite of BC, Culinary Arts, and Home Economics classrooms, homeschools, and anyone interested in food and farming can use the following Spotlight Series on Honey tools to learn about bees and honey:
- Video: Students can learn about honey farming in a 14-minute video featuring the passionate team at Campbell’s Gold Honey Farm & Meadery. The video was a collaboration of BCAITC, 4-H BC, and the BC Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Fisheries.
- Activity: Educators can teach students about different types of honey with a honey tasting activity and lesson plan.
- Recipes:Students can practise their culinary skills while making delicious honey recipes created by BCAITC’s Chef Trevor Randle such as Chocolate Pudding with BC Honey Candied Hazelnuts, and BC Belgian Endive and Cranberry Slaw with Honey.
- GIS Activity: Students can explore Grow BC, an interactive GIS map and story resource, to learn about BC honey. This resource provides straightforward integration into class curriculum.
Pat Tonn, BCAITC’s Executive Director, said, “We’re excited to present our newest Spotlight Series on honey. Students can learn about bees and beekeeping, how honey is made, how to cook with honey, careers as an apiarist, and more valuable information.”
Chef Trevor Randle said, “I’m excited to use the Spotlight Series to teach students about BC honey and how it makes its way from farm to table. Students will learn how to incorporate this natural sweetener into a variety of dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.”
