30 New Fresh Stories

As we continue to enjoy BC’s bountiful harvest, BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation (BCAITC) is helping students build healthy minds and bodies with the launch of 30 new Fresh Stories!

The new BCAITC Fresh Stories provide education and activities related to BC grown fruits and vegetables (such as plums, kiwifruit, peaches, blueberries, tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers) and milk products for kindergarten to grade 9 students. Fresh Stories feature curriculum-linked applications to primary and intermediate level Language Arts, Math, Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Food Studies.

Fresh Stories provide valuable resources for educators to teach students about food in a fun learning environment. With interactive activities like making paper maché pears, learning the cultural symbols connected with mandarin oranges, participating in kiwifruit sharing ladders, completing strawberry math lessons, conducting school food waste audits, learning about organic farming certification, and more, students can have fun, explore, and learn with Fresh Stories!

Teachers, students, and at-home educators can download free Fresh Stories resources below. From farming, to the environment, nutrition, food waste, and the cultural significance of foods, these resources introduce food and agriculture education into children’s lives to encourage healthy eating and food appreciation for years to come.

The new Fresh Stories are launched in conjunction with BCAITC’s popular BC School Fruit and Vegetable Nutritional Program and + Milk 2020/2021 program. The programs, which deliver fresh BC fruits, vegetables, and milk to over half a million students annually, ensure that the province’s students have access to nutritious foods.

“Students love the fresh fruits, veggies, and milk they receive from our BC School Fruit and Vegetable Nutritional Program and + Milk program,” says Pat Tonn, Executive Director of BCAITC. “Many student are trying new foods that they have never had the opportunity to taste before. With the help of Fresh Stories, teachers can weave food and agriculture literacy into classroom curriculum,” Tonn continued. “Fresh Stories showcase BC’s amazing food story and help with our shared goal of ensuring the health and well-being of our province on many levels.”

Thanks to the key partners that help make the Fresh Stories learning resource possible: The Province of BC and the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

Thank you to the teachers, writers, editors, and graphic designer partners who created Fresh Stories: Madeleine Baerg, Samantha Dunlop, Gail Chan, Sydney Massey, Rachelle Kanefsky, Carol Watterson, and Jackie Veasey.
