Day at the Farm: Exploring BC Agriculture with BCAITC

On September 9, 2023, the BC Agriculture in the Classroom (BCAITC) Foundation had the pleasure of participating in the Day at the Farm event, hosted by the Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust in collaboration with Westham Island Herb Farm. This event provided an incredible opportunity for visitors to see agriculture and taste BC products firsthand.

The Culinary Experience:

One of the standout attractions at the BCAITC booth was an array of culinary delights prepared by AITC Chef Trevor Randle, along with the talented culinary arts students from Delta Secondary School. From farm-fresh vegetables to locally sourced meats, the dishes featured locally sourced BC products, offering a true taste of the Delta's culinary excellence. Visitors had the opportunity to savour these delicious creations while gaining insights into the importance of supporting local agriculture. Ingredients for the samples were donated from BC Egg, Emma Lea Farms, BC Fresh, Save On Foods, and Dairyland(Saputo).

Milk from Dairyland:

Milk from Dairyland was another star of the booth. It was a big hit among children and adults alike. With its creamy, wholesome goodness, milk captivated taste buds and offered a refreshing break during the day's activities. It was a great opportunity to educate the younger generation about the role of dairy products in our daily lives and the importance of the dairy industry in BC.

Mapping Agriculture in BC:

For those with a keen interest in maps and geography, the BCAITC booth had a special treat. Map enthusiasts were excited to learn about the Grow BC map resource detailing agriculture, fish, and food in BC. These maps offer a visual representation of the extensive agricultural landscape in the province, allowing visitors to appreciate the geographical diversity of BC's agriculture. Families were thrilled to take a copy home, turning the event into an opportunity for learning that extended beyond the day.

Day at the Farm

In conclusion, the Day at the Farm event in Delta provided an excellent platform for the BC Agriculture In The Classroom Foundation to showcase the importance of agriculture in British Columbia. The combination of delicious food, educational resources, and hands-on experiences left a lasting impression on attendees. It served as a reminder of the symbiotic relationship between agriculture and the environment, especially in the unique setting of the Fraser River Delta. With initiatives like these, BCAITC continues to promote agricultural literacy and ensure that future generations have a deep appreciation for the food on their plates and the farms that make it possible.
