BC Agriculture in the Classroom Volunteers with Fraser Valley Gleaners
BC Agriculture in the Classroom (BCAITC) Foundation staff had the opportunity to volunteer with Fraser Valley Gleaners on December 6. Fraser Valley Gleaners specializes in transforming donated surplus and non-marketable vegetables into a dehydrated vegetable soup mix. This mix, a result of the collaborative efforts of passionate volunteers, is then distributed to partner organizations around the world, reaching those in need.
On weekday mornings, volunteers from diverse walks of life come together to sort and process the vegetables, a task that involves chopping, dicing, and spreading the produce on trays. These trays are then wheeled into industrial-size drying units, where the vegetables undergo a drying process lasting between 8-10 hours. Once dried, the product is carefully stored in barrels, accumulating throughout the season until there's enough to create the versatile just-add-water soup mix.
What struck us most during our volunteering experience was the sense of community that permeated the facility. Retired professionals worked side by side with young individuals, creating a harmonious blend of experience and unparalleled enthusiasm.
Our staff had the opportunity to connect with the volunteers over a cup of coffee, fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie. Conversations flowed, and stories were shared, revealing the passion that drives individuals to contribute their time to such a noble cause. One volunteer, who has dedicated an impressive 22 years to this cause, shared, "I have been volunteering here since the building was being constructed, and I've witnessed the evolution of equipment and processes over the years. Volunteering here has become an integral part of my routine, and it brings me immense joy to know that my time spent here makes a difference around the world."
This sentiment encapsulates the essence of volunteering – the joy derived from contributing to a cause larger than oneself. The dedication of the volunteers at Fraser Valley Gleaners serves as a powerful reminder that individual efforts, no matter how small, collectively create a significant impact on a global scale.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Fraser Valley Gleaners for their dedication to addressing food insecurity and for allowing us to be a part of their impactful work. Their dedication exemplifies the spirit of community and service, reminding us all of the profound difference we can make when we come together with purpose. Thank you for allowing us to witness the incredible work being done at Fraser Valley Gleaners. We look forward to future opportunities to support and engage with such impactful organizations.
